January 26 Roundup

Below are things I’ve learned or found interesting in the past month:*

  1. The nuclear bunker that is falling (by now probably has fallen) into the sea. Update: it fell in.

  2. T-Rexes grew until they were 40 years old!

  3. The Avengers have had many excuses given for their name. “We might not save the world, but you can be damn sure we’ll avenge it.” being one of the most famous. The truth is that in the original comic, Wasp just thought it sounded cool. She was right!

  4. Related, this is EXTREMELY NOT TRUE, but someone made a French reimagining of what the Avengers might have looked like. It’s being pitched as something Marvel stole from in 1916. This does not pass muster. Even a little bit. For one thing, Nick Fury wasn’t black until 2001. Please don’t spread this image as truth, it’s just NEAT. As a reimagining.

  5. Evan Waterman’s complete guide to making a comic.

  6. Matthew Dicks spent a week backing into parking spots. Years ago a mutual on Twitter blocked me when I asked why people back into parking spots. I think about him from time to time.

  7. Seroe Colorado (Aruba) has a large red anchor dedicated to all (lost) seaman [sic]. The anchor was recovered from the seabed, painted red, and turned into a monument and landmark. No one knows for sure what ship it came from!

  8. Related, the California Lighthouse on Aruba was named after the wreck of the S.S. California (not the S.S. Californian that ignored the Titanic), and apparently children generations later could be seen wearing “drowned” clothes (intended for sale) that washed asea after the wreck.

  9. Boosterism is the act of talking up your city, state, or country. Contrast with Knockerism!

  10. Wall Street Journal: the difference between how useful workers see ai tooling vs how useful management see it. Chart showing the perception how much time workers save weekly using AI vs C-suite execs. 40% of workers say no time, compared to 2% of execs. 2% of workers say 12+ hours, compared to 19% of execs.

11. When tying my shoes, my shoelace snapped, which raised an important question: what length of shoelace do I need?

12. When I remember, I take two minutes to play Plausible, the daily dictionary game. It’s like Balderdash with strangers.

13. Brilliantly edited list top 25 movies of ‘25. Less about the list more about the spectacle. David Ehrlich has been making these for years, and they’re all great.

14. Which of course means I should share the incredible trailer for 28 Years Later. I’m not a big trailer guy, I prefer to go into movies blind, but this one is all atmosphere.

15. Train magazine, for all your train news.

16. Last month we talked about Beowulf a bit, here’s a new theory on how to translate “hwaet”
